Admission selection
Admission is competitive and based on a holistic review of the following core factors:
- Academic performance, with emphasis on upper division undergraduate GPA, ABA specific coursework, and any previous graduate level study
- Strength, relevance, and duration of experience in applied behavior analysis, including clinical practice, research, or related settings
- Letters of recommendation addressing readiness for graduate study and potential for clinical excellence
- A statement of purpose demonstrating preparation, professional goals, professional writing, and alignment with the program
No single factor determines admission. The committee evaluates each applicant鈥檚 overall

FREQUENTLY ASKED admission QUESTIONS
Who should I ask for letters of recommendation?
Applicants should request letters from individuals who can speak directly to their academic ability, professionalism, work ethic, and potential for success in graduate study and behavior analytic fieldwork. Strong letters come from individuals who have supervised your work or evaluated your academic performance.
Most commonly, recommenders include BCBA supervisors, clinical supervisors, or former professors. If you do not yet have experience in applied behavior analysis, a faculty member or professional supervisor who can evaluate your readiness for graduate study is appropriate.
Are there any formal requirements for the purpose statement?
There is no required format or prescribed prompt for the purpose statement. Applicants should submit a one to two page narrative describing their academic and professional experiences, reasons for pursuing graduate study at USF, and professional goals following completion of the degree.
If there are aspects of your academic record that require explanation, you may include a brief addendum of no more than 300 words.
Not sure where to begin? Consider addressing the following prompts:
- Professional Preparation. Describe your academic background and professional experiences that have prepared you for graduate study in applied behavior analysis.
- Motivation and Fit. Why are you pursuing graduate training in applied behavior analysis, and why is this program a strong fit for your goals.
- Professional Goals. Describe your short term and long term professional goals and how this degree will support those goals.
- Readiness for Graduate Study. Discuss a professional or academic challenge you have faced and how you responded to it.
Consider the following guidance when preparing your statement:
- Be authentic. Write in your own voice and reflect on your experiences honestly.
- Focus on your professional development. Describe your academic background, clinical experiences, and growth in the field of behavior analysis.
- Begin early. Strong statements require drafting and revision.
- Seek thoughtful feedback. Limit reviewers to two or three trusted individuals who can provide constructive input.
- Be concise. Most effective statements are no more than two to three pages.
- Write for your audience. You are applying to a graduate program in applied behavior analysis. Emphasize information that demonstrates readiness for balancing graduate study and professional training.
- Avoid GenAI. The personal statement must reflect the applicant鈥檚 own work and writing. Because the admissions committee evaluates professional writing ability and clarity of thought, submissions that rely heavily on automated writing tools may not accurately represent an applicant鈥檚 abilities.
When will I find out if I am admitted?
Application deadlines are June 1 for Fall entry and October 15 for Spring entry. The admissions committee typically releases decisions within one to three weeks after the deadline.
In some cases, highly qualified applicants may receive a notice of admision prior to the deadline. Applicants may contact tgsmith@.usf edu for information regarding their application status.
Can I apply again if I am not admitted to the program?
Yes. Applicants may reapply in a future admission cycle. There is no limit to the
number of times an individual may apply.
Applicants are encouraged to request feedback to strengthen their application, gain
additional experience in applied behavior analysis through clinical or academic experiences,
and ensuring that all required materials are complete prior to resubmission.
What are some reasons applicants are not admitted?
Admission decisions are based on a holistic review of each application. Because of small cohort sizes and a high volume of competitive applications, not all qualified applicants can be admitted each term.
Applications may also be denied due to incomplete or missing documentation, failure
to meet minimum admission criteria, lack of demonstrated experience in applied behavior
analysis, or the absence of a secured BCBA supervisor when required. Applicants are
encouraged to carefully review all admission requirements before submitting materials.
Applicants who are not admitted are welcome to request feedback to strengthen their
experience and reapply in a future cycle.
I do not meet one of the minimum requirements. May I still apply?
Applicants who do not meet a listed minimum requirement may still submit an application. The admissions committee conducts a holistic review of all completed applications, and no single component automatically results in denial.
We recognize that preparation for graduate study in applied behavior analysis may take different forms. Some applicants enter the field later in their academic or professional careers, and others may have strengths that are not fully reflected by a single metric such as GPA. The committee evaluates overall preparation, relevant experience, professional potential, and alignment with the program.
I've been admitted to the program! What can I do next?
Congratulations on your admission.
Over the next several weeks, you will receive a series of emails from the Program Chair and Practicum Coordinator with instructions to prepare for your first semester. These communications will include information about course registration, orientation, fieldwork preparation, and important program deadlines.
Admissions processing continues after decisions are released, so additional details may be sent in stages. Please monitor your email regularly. If you have questions, you may contact the Program Chair or Practicum Coordinator.
I've been admitted to the program but am no longer able to attend. What should I do?
Admitted students may request to withdraacceptance, defer their admission, or move their application to a future admission cycle. Deferral requests should be submitted as early as possible. Deferral approval is not automatic and is reviewed on a case by case basis.
Because cohort sizes are limited and many qualified applicants seek admission each term, timely communication is essential. If you anticipate requesting a deferral, please notify the program at your earliest convenience so that we may offer the seat to another qualified applicant.
